Expert Advice... Bathroom Lighting

We quiz Soho Lighting's Independent Lighting Consultant Claire Pendarves on what works - and what to avoid - when lighting a bathroom...
IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT TYPE OF LIGHTS WORK BEST IN BATHROOMS?
Downlights certainly have their place in bathrooms but consider where you actually want the light to fall; not every inch needs to be illuminated. In terms of lighting within showers, they’re invaluable as they give crisp light and with IP65 rating can withstand steam. Wall lights on either side of the basin mirror give an even light, good for shaving and making up; more flattering than having a light above.

IS THERE ANY LIGHT FITTING YOU WOULDN'T RECOMMEND USING?
Beware of chandeliers; they can look gorgeous and in a very large and high bathroom may pass muster with the electrician – but you must consider steam, and the electrician may be reluctant to sign it off.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR LIGHTING A SMALL BATHROOM OR POWDER ROOM?
Concentrate the light around the mirror and basin and mix with some low-level lighting for mood. It’s not pleasant being spotlit by a bright downlight when sitting on the loo!

ADVICE FOR LIGHTING A LARGE BATHROOM?
For maximum flexibility use three circuits a) general lighting such as downlights b) functional lights near the basin and c) mood lighting which can double up as soft lighting for night visits.
WHAT MISTAKES TO PEOPLE MAKE WHEN CHOOSING BATHROOM LIGHTING?
The worst thing you can do is go for one overhead source of light without a dimmer. Rest assured you will not have an enjoyable bathroom experience.
HOW DOES LIGHTING AFFECT OVERALL DESIGN?
Usually, lighting must mold itself to the bathroom layout, which is often dictated by size and plumbing, but you can put your stamp on the space by the placement of lights and the fittings you select. And remember, you don’t need to stick to bathroom lights as there are some fabulous exterior lights that look great in bathrooms.
YOUR TOP TIPS FOR BATHROOMS?
Think through the various times you will be using the space and the moods you will need to create: gloomy winter morning, chilling in the bath, visiting the loo when half asleep. Always factor in dimmers, at least for the main circuits, however these must be outside the bathroom as not IP rated.
