When it comes to the festive season, we all have our own special traditions that take centre stage at this time of year. Whether rituals we have grown up with or new ones created each passing year, these little details make the magic. We asked some of our Soho Lighting friends to share the Christmas traditions they hold close...

“I love creating sustainable decorations at this time of year, and one of my favourites is the kissing ball. Traditionally crafted from greenery, flowers, or mistletoe, it’s a beautiful symbol of goodwill and romance. Originating in medieval Europe to celebrate peace and friendship, it perfectly captures the true spirit of Christmas.”

“At Christmas, we celebrate nature by bringing the outdoors in. Fresh foliage, holly for mantelpieces, and handmade wreaths from willow and garden greenery create a timeless look. We upcycle with paper chains from leftover paint samples, wrap gifts in recyclable paper or fabric, and tuck sprigs of rosemary into napkin rings for a natural flourish. Our tree absorbs carbon during its life, then becomes compost, gate posts, or firewood - nothing is wasted. Decorating waits until the family is home, so everything looks fresh and vibrant. For us, it’s beauty with purpose - a festive season rooted in sustainability.”

“Christmas has always been special to me, having grown up in Austria where the season is truly magical with early markets, snowy streets, and festive cheer. At home, I recreate that atmosphere with silver ornaments, antique tealight holders, and branches from the garden, mixed with real candles to bring a soft alpine glow throughout the house.”

“As a father of five, Christmas is very much a family affair, centred around the home and our children. Our most cherished decorations are those that carry memories, many handmade by the children over the years, along with a few crafted in our own workshops from antique brass and leather, materials used throughout our collections. Together they tell the story of family, craft, and time spent creating.”

“I think my mother slightly ruined me when it comes to Christmas - she just did it so beautifully. I never wanted to be anywhere else than with her. Being Austrian, we always celebrated on Christmas Eve, or Heilig Abend as we call it, with the Christkind rather than Father Christmas. Now, we weave both Austrian and English traditions together, whether we’re here or in Austria, but that Austrian thread still very much runs through it all. There are always lots of candles everywhere (real ones on the tree, too!), antique wooden decorations passed down through generations, traditional incense, and the sound of traditional Christmas music. It all feels deeply special, magical, and full of warmth.”

“Christmas is still a relatively 'new' affair at Admirals House. It was only two years ago I had a kitchen and could therefore properly host Christmas for the first time! But even in the years before that, amongst the dust and detritus of the renovation, there's always a real tree. It's not just about the way they look, or the incredible smell - it's the whole process... going and choosing it, walking up and down to pick the best one... the fun and games of carrying and unwrapping a 12ft tree (usually in the pouring rain!), that's really the start of Christmas for me!”

“Candles, candles, candles. There’s nothing to beat them! But only one scented candle as otherwise the impact can be overwhelming. When I was young, a lovely Danish neighbour in our village initiated a tradition for many of us to place lit candles in our main windows on Christmas Eve. I remember the enchanting effect as we walked to church for midnight mass. Fairy lights can be magical but I only ever use warm white and never twinkling or pulsating. If guests are arriving and we’re not in the midst of a Cornish gale, I’ll light tealights and place them in jam jars to light the path and then flank the porch with two large storm lanterns. I never light real candles on the Christmas tree, having been rather put off when a friend decided to light hers on twelfth night and the entire tree exploded!”

As the clocks change and our day-to-day gets a little gloomier, we’re exploring the tips and tricks to lighting dark rooms...
LESS IS MORE...
It might seem logical to add more light fittings to a dark room, but that can actually make the space feel colder and flatter. Instead of flooding the room with ceiling spots, think smarter - not brighter.
THINK OUTSIDE THE... CEILING
A common mistake is relying on overhead lights like downlights. These mostly illuminate the floor, drawing the eye downward and making the room feel heavy. In darker spaces, you want to lift the eye upward to create a sense of openness and airiness.

PLACEMENT IS KEY
Where and how you place your lights matters more than how many you use. Bouncing light off walls and ceilings using up or wall lights builds a soft, ambient base. This is where “less is more” really shines.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT LIGHTBULB
For task lighting, go with warm white (around 2700K) and a high CRI (above 95) to keep colours true. For cosy evenings, dim-to-warm bulbs that shift to a sunset-like 1800K are perfect. Pair them with dimmer switches for full mood control.

LAYER YOUR LIGHTING
Use lighting at different heights to guide the eye around the room. Wall lights are brilliant for lifting long walls and adding depth through shadows. Table lamps on a 5-amp circuit are a must for that cosy evening glow.

MAKE YOUR PENDANTS WORK HARDER
Pendant lights aren’t just functional - they’re stylish. Hang them solo or in clusters to make a statement. Choose finishes like brass or glass to bounce light and make the space feel more open and inviting.
CREATE A "WOW" FACTOR
Great lighting should appeal to your emotions. If a beautifully designed room doesn’t give you that “wow” moment when you walk in, chances are the lighting isn’t quite right.
As the clocks change and our day-to-day gets a little gloomier, we’re exploring the tips and tricks to lighting dark rooms… LESS IS MORE…It might seem logical to add more light fittings to a dark room, but that can actually make the space feel colder and flatter. Instead of flooding the room with ceiling spots, […]

For me, lighting is as important as the architecture, furniture, and fabrics. In a large country house, it sets the entire mood - it can make a room feel intimate despite grand proportions or, conversely, highlight beautiful details like aged panelling or a much-loved painting. I always think of lighting as layers: task, ambient and accent, but also as a way of bringing soul into a space. A lamp with a shade in an antique faded fabric and trim, or an antique chandelier with a living brass finish that has gently aged over time, immediately gives depth and a sense of history.
One of the biggest mistakes is relying only on ceiling spotlights or only on source of light spots create glare and strip a room of its atmosphere. The same goes for one single pendant in a room, which gives a gloomy depressing feel. Equally, placing all lighting on one circuit makes it impossible to shift the mood. In a home, particularly a country house where rooms are often used for different purposes, flexibility is everything. My advice is to layer, dim wherever possible, and never underestimate the beauty of many table lamps and standard lamps together with picture and wall light! They add softness, character, and, when chosen well, can feel like objects of art.
I recently worked on a large drawing room in a Georgian country house. The scale was vast and challenging, but rather than relying on one central chandelier as they had before we started, we created pools of light throughout with lots of different antique table lamps, wall sconces with beautiful antique fabric shades and picture lights all on dimmers and separate circuits. We also added some indirect mini spots behind objects on shelves to create depth and interesting shadows which made the room flexible and welcoming at any time of day, whether for reading quietly in a corner or hosting a lively evening gathering. I always love to add reading standard lamps by the chairs or sofas. The effect was transformative, what could have felt vast and cold became warm, layered, and inviting.
It’s about finding solutions that don’t compromise the overall feel. For bathrooms, I still want lighting to feel atmospheric, so I’ll source fittings with the right IP rating that also have a sense of timelessness and craftsmanship and add softer shades to them, or I use antique fittings that we have custom re wired by our specialists. Kitchens are more technical, of course, but even there I avoid anything too clinical. I’d rather bring in antique pendants with beautiful finishes that will mellow over time, combined with discreet indirect task lighting or lighting within glades units. I particularly adore table lamps in kitchens whether on the island or the counter it helps make the room feel like a living space rather than just utilitarian.
I’m less interested in fleeting trends and more in what endures. I love the move towards “living finishes”, materials that age gracefully and tell a story. Many collections now offer solid brass that patinates over time, which feels very much in keeping with my approach to interiors. The Palaces Collection is a wonderful example, the designs have a timeless elegance, and because they develop character with age, they sit beautifully in country houses where history and lived-in charm are essential.
We chatted to the acclaimed interior designer and creative director of VSP Interiors about the power of lighting… How do you approach lighting as a design element rather than just a functional necessity? For me, lighting is as important as the architecture, furniture, and fabrics. In a large country house, it sets the entire mood […]

"The Hollen Globe has to be one of my favourite Soho Lighting pieces. As a take on the famous 1950s French Holophane street lamps, it has this timeless quality that can, in my opinion, be used in almost any setting. It can be both modern and classic and is just such a statement piece, without feeling showy or over-the-top. The light it gives is just incredible: warm, diffused, sparkly due to its prismatic effect and even as a stand alone light source, it gives the most incredible, cosy glow.
"I've used the Hollen several times - most memorably in a grand Devon manor, where it made a striking impact in the Ladies’ and Gents’ loos. Now at home, two Hollen Globes in the entrance and stairwell have completely transformed the space, even before any major decorating.
"What matters most to me is the exceptional materials and build quality. While similar lights exist, none match the Hollen’s weighty glass or the solid, beautifully crafted brass work, from the caps to the chains."

"Two slightly different iterations of the same lantern, we used the Langdon Lantern at the same manor house project in the hallways and in the smaller size in the pantry. To me this is the perfect, understated, use anywhere lantern. Beautiful in it’s simplicity, perfectly crafted with stand-out materials and finishes. It can sit quietly or as a statement and, again, is equally comfortable in traditional or modern settings. I think this would be perfect as a porch lantern as well... maybe one day!"

"The Glasshouse is a true statement piece! I love it in both clear, with its charming pressed-glass imperfections, and opal, which gives a beautifully diffused glow. We used opal in a large kitchen where its bold presence sparked conversation, earning the nickname the ‘Jelly Mould’ light. Paired with unlacquered brass, they age gracefully, adding timeless character."

"I haven’t had the opportunity to use the Warwick as yet, but I can’t wait to have the right setting for it. This reminds me of old Hungarian or European factory lighting, which I have been lucky enough to source originals of in the past, but these are as good as the originals, if not better. Solid and weighty, with just the right mix of industrial and glamour. The use of brass in these is what makes them so special and unique and gives them so much more useability that the original, more utilitarian, iron or aluminum counterparts. I can see myself reaching for them for a Victorian stable office conversion that we have just started, or as a bit of an unexpected juxtaposition in a traditional kitchen. I feel like I could build a whole design around these as a starting point."

"I can’t not mention the Ocean Collection. The whole concept is just brilliant and the lights themselves are so different to what I would have imagined from a 3D-printed plastic! They diffuse light in such a soft and delicate way, reminiscent more of draped fabric or porcelain than hard plastic. We used one of the Scallop Shell fittings in Surf White, printed to a custom size for us, in a small dining nook that we created, over a round marble topped bistro table. We rigged it up to a rise and fall fitting and it looked so perfect, one could think it was an antique fitting that had always been there."

"I am a complete convert to Soho Lighting sockets and switches. The build quality is second to none. I have been using the Old Brass collection - and special mention has to go to the 2 way dimming toggles. The toggles work so brilliantly in more traditional settings and the fact that they are 2 way dimming is brilliant: no more running to the other side of the room to dim the lights!
"I am quite a stickler when it comes to finishes, and I could not be more excited for The Palaces Collection. I know that these will become my go to collection for all of my projects as the finishes are exquisite and will look at home in any setting, but specifically heritage properties, where trying to find switches and sockets to work harmoniously can be a real challenge. The innovative magnetic plates that Soho Lighting have developed also mean that you can have a truly flush plate, without any screws or bulky edge clips. And possibly, most importantly, the technology behind these traditional beauties means that they actually work, with no flickering or buzzing and also means that this collection can be used across the entire project, including USB, media, data and TV sources as well as with intelligent systems, which in the past have been an eyesore in any project. I know that this collection will be a complete game-changer."

This year, our continued passion for period architecture has led to an extraordinary collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces – a prestigious partnership celebrating some of Britain’s most iconic residences. Unveiled in the majestic setting of Kensington Palace, State Apartments, The Palaces Collection is a range of switches and sockets inspired by the opulence, artistry and heritage of royal interiors.
This special collaboration has granted us rare access to the historic sites under the care of Historic Royal Palaces, as well as the exquisite private home of Wolterton Hall in Norfolk. This Palladian masterpiece sets the stage for our Palaces Collection, offering the perfect harmony of timeless interiors - rich in story and quiet elegance - that this unique collection so beautifully encapsulates.

“For a collection born of regal inspiration, Wolterton Hall, with its exquisite interior finishes, intricate plasterwork and architectural drama echoes the detail, craftsmanship and quiet grandeur that define our switches and sockets.”
Lee Lovett, Co-Founder & Creative Director
Built between 1727 and 1742 for Horatio Walpole by the architect Thomas Ripley, Wolterton Hall has been sympathetically restored to its former glory by Keith Day and Peter Sheppard and boasts six state rooms and 12 bedrooms. The estate has strong historical ties to British aristocracy, particularly through Horatio Walpole, 1st Baron Walpole of Wolterton, who was the brother of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first Prime Minister. The Hall has hosted many prominent figures over the centuries, and it houses many portraits of the royal family, including one of King George I, which was gifted to Horatio Walpole.
Marrying elegant aesthetics and innovative technology, the panel-mounted plates are a faithful representation of original hardware and finishes found in the palaces. Handcrafted from solid brass and sitting flush to the wall, they are traditional in style but backed by cutting-edge functionality.
The state-of-the-art magnetic plate system dramatically simplifies installation whilst creating a truly flawless and screwless finish. Available in three stunning finishes – Natural Brass, Aged Brass and Heritage Bronze - the collection is set to evolve further with additional finishes, toggle designs and lighting. Our Bespoke Engraving service offers a further mark of distinction.
With thanks to Jon Day for his exquisite photography, and to George Wilcox and all the team at Norfolk Locations.

To launch our Artisan Collection, where we collaborate with talented makers and designers from around the world, we have teamed up with renowned landscape architect Randle Siddeley to create a collection of lamps inspired by his travels to Nicaragua. Randle is taking part in WOW!house 2025, which kicks off at the Chelsea Design Centre in June, so we were delighted to have the opportunity to chat to him about the event, how he introduces light into his garden designs, and the stunning Soho Lighting x Siddeley Ceramics Collection...
I went to WOW!house for the first time last year and it really was “wow”. The avenue of interior designers and the cleverness of going from room to room is fantastic. It’s hugely inspirational; demonstrating the best of what the industry offers.
Interestingly, more than 35 years ago, there was a similar event, which took place in an actual house on Cornwall Terrace in London. Fleur Rossdale was the inspiration behind it and I remember my father (renowned interior designer John Siddeley) did the sitting room. So to go to WOW!house and see how the concept has gathered more momentum was wonderful.
When I am designing a garden, I don’t want to see the light source, just the light. I think you can over light a garden; I like to play with shadows. Gardens speak differently at night, they present themselves differently, so don’t miss out on their year-round beauty.

My ceramics and the Soho Lighting x Siddeley ceramics are all individually handmade and hand painted so all slightly different. I love that they are not mass produced, there are only a select few on sale.
Their shape is not perfect, which is what is amazing about them. They are pieces of art, beautiful individually or displayed together. Shape is important, it’s unique and organic which is what I find interesting about the relationship between exterior and interiors. Each vase is carved and the undulating lines of the vase form and design is like the terracing of a garden.

It seemed only fitting that we launched this unique collection in the opulent surroundings of The State Apartments in Kensington Palace. With an evocative look at the history of the palaces by curator Lee Prosser – who had us spellbound as he dimmed the lights in the King’s drawing room to reflect true candlelight - and an exclusive account of the collection by our co-founder Lee Lovett, who has spent the last two years exploring the heritage and allure of Hampton Court and Kensington Palaces, guests were immersed in the beauty of the past, reimagined
Resplendent in evening dress to match the opulent surroundings, we welcomed VIP guests, from designers, architects, press and trade clients, who gathered to celebrate a truly special collection.

Following months of exploration behind the scenes of historic treasures at Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace, The Palaces Collection takes its inspiration from the architecture, interiors and gardens of the palaces; extracting the essence of a pattern, an artefact, a finish, switch, socket or light to create a collection that reflects the history and character of these beautiful spaces.

This year has been a thrilling, jam-packed twelve months of growth, learning, collaborations, events, innovations and beautiful lighting, bulbs, switches and sockets. Join us in a round-up of what we’ve been up to in 2024...

We are thrilled to now have two fabulous creative spaces where you can engage with our collections. You told us two years ago at Decorex that touching and seeing our lighting in person truly exemplifies the quality, high performance and attention to detail that we pour into our products. We waited for the right opportunity and now you can visit us in the Avenue at Chelsea Harbour Design Centre, London, where we share a showroom with Simpsons, or pop into Olive & Barr’s new flagship store in Tenbury Wells.

Exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the first time was a highlight this year and we were thrilled to be awarded a 5-star rating for our stand! We met so many fabulous people and returning to Decorex was as fantastically frenetic and fun packed as ever. The opportunity to demonstrate our latest lighting and technical developments, to listen live to our customer feedback and ideas, whilst collaborating with wonderful people and brands that we love and admire, is a pure delight. Our showroom saw design talks on The Journey to B Corp and The Art of Metallics, proving an important platform to meet, greet and learn from fellow design creatives and industry heavyweights.
‘’Aside from creating beautiful lighting with exciting functionality, my favourite part of our business is engaging with our customers. Listening to their thoughts and feedback, hearing their ideas and perceived gaps in the market absolutely informs and drives how we develop our collections. These conversations are nuggets of gold, and I cherish them."

We asked our co-founder and some of our Soho Lighting friends, experts in their creative fields, what trends will be hot in the worlds of lighting and design in the coming year...
"We're seeing a trend towards cuboid-shaped lighting, with designers looking for angular symmetry in their schemes; our new hand-blown Montague Cuboid light and classic lanterns are ideal for tapping into this trend.
Architectural lighting continues to build in popularity, with our Chelsea Collection proving a bestseller amongst interior designers. The ability to bounce, direct and cross light using our solid brass Chelsea directional Spotlight allows designers to create multifunctional lighting using the smallest of lights with the mightiest impact.
"We're also seeing a change in direction for popularity of finishes, leaning into a wider selection of metallics. While Brass will always be perennially popular, there’s a growth in demand for bronze and silver tones. Coupled with a braver blending of metal finishes, 2025 promises to be an exciting year in metallics!"

"Mixing metals in 2025 is about subtlety and craftsmanship. The focus is on pairing finishes like brushed antique brass and warm bronze in a way that feels cohesive. Layering textures—such as our hand-etching or feathered effects—adds depth and richness with a quiet, refined shimmer. The result is a rich yet understated combination, where each element complements the others in a thoughtful, deliberate way.”

“2025 will be the year when we ramp up conscious consumption. As the world gets more unsafe, we need our homes to be a sanctuary, where we can shut out the outside and just be part of our own family life. For paint this means feeling the colours are gentle and supportive - they can be strong or pale to do this, but they need to have reliable tonality. I expect more people to try browns as they are such a great backdrop and go well with the pinks that are hugely popular at the moment. More colourful neutrals will also play a role and I’m sure that some of our strong offerings like Tyrian or Malahide will also hit the spot."

“Generally, people are taking more responsibility for the pieces they select when designing and furnishing their homes. They like to feel a sense of provenance and some connection to the journey of the product, so they move away from the concept of mass production.
Design is becoming more elegant with quality brass and variations of glass, both in terms of colour and finish, becoming popular. The industrial look is slowly losing popularity and there's an emphasis on quality and durability.”

What will be hot in 2025? We explore some of the trends causing a stir across lighting and interiors...
Vintage will reign in 2025 as we are drawn to the unique character and history that classic items bring. As many of us focus on sustainability, vintage is an eco-friendly option. At Soho Lighting, we are continually inspired by vintage and period pieces – the craftsmanship and materials offering a quality and timelessness that is hugely appealing.
Practical to maintain and a brilliant reflector of light, hand-blown glass will shine brightly in 2025. We are drawn again and again to glass as an endlessly evocative material – and hand-blown glass is extra special. Its versatility is unparalleled, offering elegant simplicity or show-stopping intricacy. Perfect for small spaces, clear glass allows the eye to pass seamlessly through to the room beyond, while prismatic, milk or fluted glass can command your attention, working beautifully in a large space to draw the eye in or simply make a statement.
Biophilic lighting is trending in 2025 as we focus on integrating natural elements into indoor spaces, which helps to promote well-being and reduce stress. This trend is part of a broader movement towards biophilic design, which aims to reconnect people with nature in their everyday environments. Overall, biophilic lighting represents a fusion of nature and technology, aiming to create healthier and more harmonious living spaces.
This warm-toned metal is set to see a resurgence in popularity, usurping stainless steel as the metal of choice. With its warm tones, it radiates warmth and comfort, creating a welcoming and inviting feel to any space. Its rich colour will add a touch of sophistication and luxe to your interior and it pairs beautifully with both neutral and bold colour schemes. From a sustainability point of view, it is durable and recyclable, which aligns with the trend towards eco-friendly design.

The opportunity to combine metals, such as brass and nickel, can actually harmonise and balance your space, adding depth, interest, and sophistication. This versatile design approach can complement various styles, from modern to traditional. As Soho Lighting Creative Director Lee Lovett notes: “We're seeing a change in direction for popularity of finishes, leaning into wider range of metallics. While brass will always be perennially popular, we're seeing growth in demand for bronze finishes and silvered tones, both brushed and polished chrome.”

An integral part of everything we do at Soho Lighting, striving to be as environmentally conscious as possible, from circular design, to packaging, through to sustainably focused projects and our journey to B Corp accreditation; sustainable style is not a passing trend for us, but a passion centered at the heart of all we do. With new sustainable designs, building on our award-winning community initiatives and pioneering creations, this journey continues into 2025.

Our homes are working harder than ever before to be all things to all people. As the working from home trend remains, we continue to spend more time at home and therefore creating a multi-functional space is key. Areas in the home can often be office by day and sanctuary by night. Layered lighting is one easy way of transforming your space, softly lit to bright and energy-giving at the touch of a dimmer, the right choice of light bulb and the layering of sconces, pendants and downlights.

Enhanced User Experience, Seamless Functionality and Sustainability and Efficiency are all buzz words when talking about Technology Integrated Design. With our pioneering Smart Dimmers, we were early adopters of this trend, balancing innovation, functionality and aesthetics in our lighting, switches and sockets.
This trend combines the rich, layered look of maximalism with a more curated, thoughtful approach to interiors. It is a trend that values uniqueness and encourages bold choices, where mixing and matching periods, styles and unique pieces is the order of the day. Note that comfort and functionality are a key part of the trend: the pared-back caveat meaning spaces must be functional as well as fantastic.

Often the unsung heroes of lighting, wall lights offer incredible versatility in both style and function. They’re perfect as space-saving bedside alternatives, practical task lights, elegant enhancements for large walls and hallways, and layering in a soft, ambient light alternative to overhead lighting. This all-round lighting gem will add a stylish touch to any room.
Illuminate your hallway or landing with strategically placed wall lights that look elegant during the day and provide a guiding light at night. Wall lights are an excellent choice for these areas as they keep the floor clear, enhancing the flow in these frequently used spaces. They can also breathe life into practical, often-overlooked areas, adding to the overall aesthetic of your interior and providing ambient light to spaces that can be gloomy, especially during the darker months.
Cast a soft glow on your favorite artworks or frame them by positioning wall lights on either side. Wall lights, especially when placed around mirrors, provide focused illumination ideal for tasks like shaving, applying makeup, or styling your hair. Opt for a wall light with an adjustable shade that can be positioned to cast light in any desired direction. This helps reduce shadows and ensures you have the right amount of light where you need it most. Properly positioned wall lights can also help reduce glare, making the bathroom more comfortable to use. This is particularly beneficial for those with sensitive eyes or for creating a relaxing environment.
Wall lights are a fantastic alternative to table lamps, especially in smaller bedrooms, as they free up valuable bedside table space. They create a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for a soothing ambiance at bedtime. Available in a variety of styles, from modern to vintage, wall lights allow you to choose fixtures that complement your bedroom’s decor.
Wall lights can effortlessly add hypnotic interest to a small space, creating intimacy and coziness for ultimate relaxation. Conversely, lighting a large room can be more challenging, making layered lighting essential for achieving the perfect ambiance. Let your statement pendant and wall lights work together, with the wall lights playing a supporting role in creating ambiance in any space. For a more eclectic approach, mix different styles for a lesson in maximalism. Inject character and charm with vintage-style wall lights, which, like pendants over a kitchen island, work well in pairs
While garden lighting is primarily practical, it doesn’t have to be dull. Clever lighting can transform a patio, garden, or terrace into a thing of beauty both day and night. While bright lighting is essential for security, wall lights can also provide a softer aesthetic, offering an inviting glow even on the darkest days. They add architectural interest and enhance safety by illuminating garden walls and dark passageways, enlivening otherwise boring brickwork.
This all-round lighting hero will add another dimension to your space Often the unsung heroes of lighting, wall lights offer incredible versatility in both style and function. They’re perfect as space-saving bedside alternatives, practical task lights, elegant enhancements for large walls and hallways, and layering in a soft, ambient light alternative to overhead lighting. Our sockets and switches are beautifully designed, meticulously engineered and available in an array of classic and contemporary finishes, from brasses, nickels and coppers through to matt black and white metal. To guide you through the wealth of choice, we garner expert advice on pairing the perfect paint colour to complement each of our finishes.
With a sharp focus on our environmental responsibilities, who better to quiz on ‘all things paint’ than Emma Perry, Colour Consultant at Edward Bulmer Natural Paint.
The highly regarded plant-based paint company was created by heritage interior designer Edward Bulmer, his mission: “To produce high quality paints that look beautiful, protect buildings and avoid polluting our environment.” They have been leading a natural paint revolution, creating pioneering plant-based paints that are in demand by renovators and interior designers across the globe, looking for responsible, chemical free materials for the home.
We were delighted with Emma’s advice as to the shades and hues that, in her expert opinion, best complement each finish.

The refined Savoy Collection of brushed brass sockets and switches enrich a space with warm, golden brass tones. Paired with a choice of black or white inserts, this versatile collection creates impact in any interior setting.
Emma suggests: “With this, I would go muted and elegant, something like Drab Green; paired together they look really smart and contemporary at the same time.”

The Finsbury Collection of polished chrome sockets and switches will bounce light throughout your interior, with its reflective, silvered finish.
Emma suggests: “I think you could go with either a neutral or stronger approach to complementing this light finish. If I was going neutral, I’d select something warm like Quaker, with no huge contrast, or to create more drama you could look towards Azurite or Vert de Mer, both warm colours which allow the switch to take centre stage and stand out.”

The Lombard Collection of brushed chrome sockets and switches offers a subtle silvered finish with a durable texture that has the added practical benefit of hiding fingerprints and small blemishes. It is a slightly warmer, less reflective alternative to Polished Chrome.
Emma suggests: “I think, again, you could adopt a more neutral Quaker or Paris Grey or, for a stronger contrast, think Vert de Mer or Azurite and make the switch pop.”

The Eldon Collection is a popular choice for modern styled homes and works seamlessly in white kitchens and neutral interiors. For those who prefer a contemporary aesthetic, this minimalist flat plate design is the ideal choice.
Emma suggests: “As it is so white, unless you are going for a seamless blend with the wall colour, I would go with a deep colour like Aquatic.”

Our Belgravia Collection of plates have been meticulously matched to original pieces of Georgian brass work, such as door handles and cabinetry details, giving a faithful representation of oxidised, unpolished, timeworn brass, with a rich honey matt patina.
Emma suggests: “This is beautiful and quite regal, so I would be looking more towards our rich colours. Etruscan Brown, which is a majestic sitting room colour; Pompadour or Tyrian – all strong colours, but I think that this finish can take it.”

The exquisite copper plates of the Chiswick Collection are hand finished and individually aged to perfection, giving each plate a naturally warm and classic appeal.
Emma suggests: “ With a finish like this, I would lean into the depth and go with a darker shade like Tea Green or Brunswick Green Deep. This will minimise the contrast between your fixture and the paint on the walls – enabling you to lean into the darkness.”

Our Westminster Collection of plates have been carefully matched to original Georgian and Victorian brass works such as door handles and cabinetry details, giving a faithful representation of heavily oxidised, un-polished, timeworn brass, with a rich dark matt patina.
Emma suggests: “Staying with the warm tones, I would be looking towards a darker hue, such as our new colour, Saxony. If you prefer something a little lighter, I would stay strong and opt for a vibrant colour like Turquoise.”

The sumptuously rich, dark qualities of this matt bronze finish is undeniably classic and looks resplendent in period style interiors. The subtle sheen of the switch toggle and rockers authentically replicates years of use, offered in a choice of two accent detail pairings: subtle antiqued bronzed or brushed brass.
Emma suggests: “I see a bit of green in this finish. I wouldn’t try to match it but stick with a green shade such as Eau de Nile, which is a beautiful organic green. The combination looks sensational!”

The commanding appearance and flawless softened matt finish of this range strikes a masculine tone and is a popular choice for contemporary homes. Available with matt black or brushed brass toggles and dimmer detailing to perfectly complement your interior.
Emma suggests: “This is a great contemporary finish and, as it is richly dark, I would look towards a lighter, warmer shade like Jonquil. It has a hint of yellow pigment and, depending on the light within your room, you could go with 60, 40, 20% of Jonquil. The lighter the room the fuller strength of Jonquil it can hold.

The Charterhouse collection of lacquered antique brass sockets and switches offers a timeless appearance, providing a warm tone which naturally conceals fingerprints and small blemishes and is our most popular collection finish.
Emma suggests: “This antique brass finish would look stunning against Invisible Green, or if you are looking for something more neutral and softer, Fawn would provide a beautiful complement”

Our independent lighting designer Claire Pendarves originally qualified as an interior designer and is now a lighting consultant with over 20 years’ experience. Here she aims to demystify the world of lighting design and answer your frequently asked questions.
Try not to leave the design of your lighting plan until the last minute – start tackling it at the same time as other details such as flooring, heat pumps and kitchen design. The earlier you decide on your lighting layout, the more you can weave in modern techniques such as hidden LED lighting profiles and inground LED uplights. And it will help with your budgeting as well; your electrical contractor can’t really give you a quote until they know what’s required.
At Soho, we offer an online service, so there is no need to visit provided I’m given detailed architectural plans. Even with local lighting design work [Claire is based in Cornwall], I’ll usually work on the plans before the build has even started, so distance isn’t an issue.

No, I only do the lighting design plan and specify the lights I would recommend. I also use my interior design skills to recommend feature lights that I believe will enhance the interior. This may include Soho Lighting products and equally it may not. The mix of customer taste and style, along with how a client plans to practically use the space influences both the technical spec and the aesthetics of the lighting specified, typically precluding sourcing lighting from one single company for a project.
It usually takes 10-14 days, but this is dependent on the availability of your lighting designer.
A lighting designer will need to have architectural plans and, ideally, cross-sections, especially if there are sloping ceilings or complicated levels. Plus, kitchen layouts as well as bathrooms. It can also help to know how you plan to place any furniture in the living areas and bedrooms.
The lighting design plan will be marked up with clear symbols and a legend showing what each glyph refers to. With my plans, I also supply a section illustrating all the proposed light fittings as well as a spreadsheet detailing each circuit, product reference, and the supplier so everything is clear.
I don’t get involved in home automation per se, but I mark up the circuits so this can be incorporated into a smart home set up with ease.
This is where the Soho Lighting technical team step in to support my plans with switches and sockets.

It’s always best to have the kitchen plans from the kitchen designer, but I appreciate that this isn’t always possible in the early stages. If the architectural plans show the correct positions of the kitchen furniture, I can work with those or alternatively, if you sketch the design, I can transcribe this (as best I can) onto the plan and work from there.

Yes, I will, and it’s an area I really enjoy doing. Again, I will need a detailed landscape plan to work on. Please let me know, when you ask for a quote, if you would like the garden included – usually the quote will just include exterior lighting attached to the house. I’m also happy to do a landscape lighting scheme separately if required.

This may happen more with the light fixtures rather than the architectural lighting as choosing light fittings is very personal – rather like selecting clothes. I try to gauge your style preferences during the initial discussion (by phone or zoom) but it’s very subjective.
The lights can easily be replaced with fittings that you prefer later but it helps to know the type of fitting and position, so you can select something later. I don’t propose alternative luminaires but I do supply a list of websites to help you source the perfect lights for yourself.
Nothing’s set in stone and I won’t charge for one set of changes within two weeks of presenting the design, provided the project layout remains the same. Otherwise, for further alterations a charge will be made based upon an hourly rate.

Which lighting designs and innovations are set to shine this year? What trends will we see over the next twelve months? Here we take a look at some of the key trends predicted to dominate in 2024…
An integral part of everything we do at Soho Lighting, striving to be as environmentally conscious as possible, from circular design, to packaging, through to sustainably focused projects and our journey to B Corp accreditation; sustainable style is not a passing trend for us, but a passion centered at the heart of all we do. We are adding to our award-winning Linen Collection, re-inventing solar lighting later in the spring and have an exciting grand plan to engage our youngsters in sustainable thinking, design and creation. All to be revealed and please follow us on Instagram to share in our journey.

Post Pandemic, there is still a desire to be closer to nature and that is reflected in interiors and lighting. Nature-inspired designs like our Organic Fleur Pendant, celebrate the beauty of nature and its restorative and calming qualities. Organic shapes and natural materials take centre stage, offering a softer aesthetic to interior spaces.

Encompassing orbs, spheres and globes, these designs have a more organic, softer and ethereal quality. Rounded lighting fixtures deliver a soft and diffused light, helping to create a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere. The spherical shape is often associated with a sense of harmony, balance, and elegance and in lighting looks sensational in both period and contemporary settings. Their versatile nature and soft diffusion of light allows them to blend seamlessly in any space without clashing with other elements within the room.

Health and wellbeing is always in the spotlight at the start of a new year, however the desire to look after our mental health is now much more a part of our everyday lives. The importance of a good night’s sleep for our mental wellbeing has been proven and the trend for human-centric lighting takes this a step further. Human-centric lighting mimics the clarity of natural daylight and its rhythmical changes in colour and brightness to help regulate our natural sleep-wake cycle. By choosing a dimmable bulb in a warm white colour temperature (2,700 – 3,000k) or a colour-changing LED bulb, your space can be lit with a positive, more organic light as opposed to the subdued yellows or harsh blues that can disrupt the body’s natural rhythms. Our pioneering high Colour Render Index (CRI) bulbs mimic the clarity natural daylight, which has been scientifically proven to increase mental well-being, reduce stress and help regulate the natural sleep-wake cycle; transforming negative harsh lighting environments into more human-centric spaces.

Many of our projects focus on period properties where being sympathetic to the architecture is key. Paying careful attention to the structural features and accentuating the original framework of a property draws attention to the personality and essence of a period building. Using lighting to enhance these beautiful aesthetics creates a captivating atmosphere and is a huge trend for this year.

This is a trend we love. Still going strong in 2024, its emphasis is on understated elegance, timeless appeal and high-quality materials. Lighting that does not ‘shout’ but allows its quality to speak for itself, softly enhancing our interiors (and exteriors) whilst being as environmentally low impact as possible.

After three years in development, we were thrilled to introduce our first dimming toggle which melds the functional aspect of a dimmer with the elegance of a toggle using award-winning Enkin technology. Our dimmer toggles are revolutionising the way we light our homes. Their multi-locational capability means you can separately dim from any number of toggles in the same room, allowing you to change the atmosphere, vitality and ambiance of a space at the flick of a switch. Home automation dimming toggles have been around for a while, however, with our newly designed technology, those of us without home automation can also dim in style. Perhaps most importantly all our dimmers have been re-engineered so they don't buzz, dim or fail - at last reliable dimmers are here!

From architectural chandeliers to industrial-inspired showstoppers, statement lighting is all about creating a dramatic focal point and being bold in your choice of lighting. The Warwick Industrial Strip Pendant is the perfect example: with its eye-catching and trend-forward design, it is both bold and stylish.

This year, our Decorex stand is a celebration of timeless design, rooted in the enduring beauty of historic homes and their relevance in today’s interiors.
The stand’s façade evokes a refined portico townhouse, leading into a spacious and airy “morning room” bathed in natural light. Painted in heritage tones and adorned with bespoke cornicing and panelled detailing, this serene space forms the perfect backdrop for our lighting, switch, and socket collections.
A panelled archway guides visitors into a more intimate antechamber, where rich velvets, gilded accents and deeper wall colours set the stage for The Palaces Collection - our creative collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces. This space also introduces The Acanthus Collection, a exclusive preview of a upcoming lighting series developed in partnership with Historic Royal Palaces.

We have curated a selection of British artisans and brands who preserve our heritage design and craftsmanship, evolving it for the modern day. Each brings a distinctive creative vision, from bespoke plasterwork to historically inspired paint. United by a soft, muted palette and intricate architectural detailing, the space tells a cohesive design story that transitions effortlessly from peaceful morning room to a darkly dramatic evening space. Find out more about our creative collaborations...
Giving us a lesson in how to sympathetically highlight architectural features in period homes, Edward Bulmer and his team have chosen a beautifully balanced palette using Mummy, Milk White, Fawn, Ethereal Blue and Indigo.
Located on the coast in North Cornwall, Decorum works with talented local artists to create hand painted tile collections and bespoke designs. Their exquisite Delft-inspired tiles are found in the fireplace of the morning room. They have cleverly created Acanthus-inspired tiles in celebration of our upcoming Acanthus Collection.

Famed decorative plasterwork specialists Stevensons of Norwich bring their master craftsmanship to the stand. Inspired by the mouldings of Hampton Court, a striking bespoke ceiling rose hosts a cascade of hand-crafted Cornish China pendants by Studio Agni adorned with plaster Acanthus leaves. A captivating art d’objet that celebrates both heritage and contemporary design.

Luxury furniture brand George Smith kindly provides the morning room’s "Conversation Piece" in Florence Honey Velvet, inviting people to rest awhile and be immersed in the beauty of the past, reimagined.

The decorative artist brings his exciting hand painting and papers to our antechamber, where delicate gold foil adorns the ceiling. Hand-painted in his trademark gold leaf, the ornate detailing is in keeping with the highly decorative, regal section of the stand.

Following on from our successful collaboration at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, we are delighted to be partnering with the wonderful GP&J Baker at Decorex. Court Velvet in Soft Sapphire, part of the sumptuous Royal Court Collection, sits handsomely in the antechamber as a backdrop to The Palaces Collection, while Palace Tapestry in Royal Blue provides another layer of interest.
